We totally understand that whilst interviewing is something we do every day, your hiring managers may only do this when someone leaves. It is crucial that the interview goes well as this can make the difference in getting the talent on board or not.
So how do your team tackle interviews? Regular feedback from candidates tells us that the best interview experiences have a clear beginning, middle and an end, whilst being engaging and informative on both parts. Sounds simple but without that structure and enthusiasm the interview falls apart. Feedback also tells us that sometimes interviewers clearly aren’t practised, they are clunky, the interview does not flow, it isn’t engaging.
Your interviewer needs to promote your organisation and the role in hand so that the candidate buys into the job and its opportunities. The introduction to the company and the opportunity itself need to come alive. Sell the company, highlight the team they could be part of and the company values – what is great about working for your business? Reputation is everything. If every candidate you see really wants to work for you, news travels fast – great that they are walking away wanting the job, locally that’s the best advertising you can get right there!
Questions should be direct, candidates can only answer the question if they understand it. If you don’t get what you want from the answer they give, ask again in a different way. Everyone interprets things differently, who wants a team that all think the same? Different is good.
Make sure you close the interview, send signals that it’s coming to an end. Lots of candidates, you would be surprised, leave not knowing what’s happening next. Manage their expectations, if you are not making a decision for a week tell them that, don’t leave things hanging with an awkward goodbye and a hand shake!
One thing we would say especially in today’s candidate market is that if you like your candidate then seek to secure them quickly, if you can see them working in your team please don’t drag your heels… time is of the essence and the best candidates will get snapped up by smart employers and you will be left disappointed. Be the smart employer!
