Key points from the REC November survey “Report on Jobs”:
Permanent placements increase at fastest rate since February
Temp billings growth strengthens to seven-month high
Sharper falls in the availability of both permanent and short-term staff
So what is the message….? Recruitment becomes yet harder, at least in the near future. Demand is up and availability down, same true story.
We would urge all employers to heed the facts. Scenario: we are still hearing about and experiencing clients that give out a job specification with a clear salary scale and the agency does their research, shares their candidates stating the salary the candidate requires and the potential employer makes an offer way under the minimum salary required. In this market it takes dedication and skill to come up with the right candidates for specific roles; if the role is particularly niche we are talking weeks at times. All this work can suddenly be dashed if a client chances their arm on an offer way below a) the scale they have advertised or b) the candidate’s requirements. If clients are working with agencies that know their onions then all of the research work and qualifying candidates will have been done already. Trust your recruiter is advising you correctly. If you have chosen wisely, they will be working hard on your behalf. Let’s face it if they aren’t making you happy and getting results they aren’t earning their keep, or paying their bills!
High demand for staff in a candidate challenged market leads to increases in pay. We agree that demands need to be realistic, as recruiters we need to validate candidates’ claims on earnings in certain circumstances. I guess the rule of thumb would be; if you would find it an insult or demotivating to be offered less money than you are currently earning (obviously there are always exceptions to this rule) then the “feel good” factor on your job offer is clearly not going to be there. If you are sceptical about salaries or need help with market comparisons your agency should be well placed to advise or research this for you. It might save you losing an excellent candidate to a competitor – opportunities are at an all time high!
