We’ve researched the stats and trawled through articles to bring you best advice plus a little extra from our own team on how to stay happy and healthy whilst your working hard.
The physical lay out of where you work can influence your mood. According to BBC News, workers in an open plan office are ‘more active’. It’s said that workers who are located in cubicles or in offices on their own are more likely to have health issues including heart problems, tiredness and low mood, it can also be linked to greater feelings of stress.
In the style of Ernest Hemmingway, who liked to stand up while writing, standing while you work is becoming more common. According to BBC News, it was Dr Buckley who invented the standing desk, quoting that ‘there is no need to sit down so much’ and says that switching from chairs to working standing up will reduce obesity and improve circulation. He also suggests that there is a link to diabetes and long periods of sitting down.
We’re completely obsessing over Dr Rangan Chatterjee’s book ‘The Four Pillar Plan’ at the moment, who suggests that if you are in a typical office job, where sitting all day long is the norm, to have ‘movement snacks’. 20 Squats before your next meeting or lunging to the printer? It may just get your heart pumping and your and increase your mood!
We all do it, if there is ever a celebration someone will pop to the bakery for a ‘treat’. Someone’s having a bad day in the office – ‘You need a little something to cheer you up’. We’re all guilty of it, but how much is too much? In a BBC News article, it is becoming a danger to our health, ‘Cake culture is fuelling obesity and dental problems’.Perhaps we should be considering a fruit platter instead of a box of jam doughnuts? A rush of sugar will inevitably end in a come down. Eating low sugar foods and drinks will prevent insulin spikes and keep you on a steady path.
We know, we are the bearer of bad news, no one likes a slice of something nice more than we do, but if you’re looking to become a little healthier, then there are little things you can cut out and a few things you can add in to your daily routine. If you and your colleagues all joined in, it may even be fun!
A class of cold water can keep you feel refreshed and awake. Even if you don’t feel it, mild dehydration can negatively impact your mood. Back in February, Stacey decided she was going to drink more water, finding that the 3 o’clock slump, craving a sweet treat was a thing of the past. The proof in the pudding is in the eating – or maybe the drinking!

Here at 1st Choice Staff Recruitment, we have Perkbox. A great way to get motivated, this month we can get money off health care, free online workout and wellness classes and savings on sportswear. So there’s nothing stopping us! In Japan, office workers are encouraged to take a nap at their desk as they are convinced it leads to better work performance and ‘nap rooms’ are becoming more popular in America (The Guardian) although we can’t imagine that catching on here and becoming the norm for quite some time yet.
Let’s face it – if you don’t put much in to your workplace, why should you expect to get much out – it is a two way street. Help to create the kind of culture you want to be in.
